Chapter 10
I COULDN’T believe my eyes. Below me, a lush green island rested upon a blanket of clouds that stretched beyond the horizon. The patch of land hovered amid the vastness of outer space. Countless stars winked in greeting, and meteors streaked by in a flash of amber before heading past Earth, which had replaced the sun in a sky that was no longer blue. It had been painted over with the radiant hues of the cosmos.
Was this where the Conclave lived? What Pierce referred to as their Fortress of Secritude?
Before I could ask the Conclave, who floated silently on my left, we sped forward, zooming toward the island at a velocity that would have torn me apart had I not been under the Conclave’s power.
A sprawling ivory palace came into view as we drew closer. Its glistening walls rose from the land, unapologetic in their grandeur. They boldly defied those who gazed upon them to violate their sanctity, for if an intruder dared to breach the perimeter, the power that maintained the sanctum’s lofty perch would decimate them.
Around the castle stood majestic trees with crowns more regal than those of the ancient forest in the Arbor on Otherworld. They surrounded the castle and stood sentry across the land, ready to defend the citadel. Their armored trunks reached out protectively in an expanse of green that enhanced the fortress’s beauty while threatening to snatch the heads off trespassers with their mighty limbs.
“Is this where you live?”
Gerald nodded. “Welcome to the Veil.”
A second later I no longer descended toward the island but stood in the middle of a circular room. Due to the sudden change in perspective and movement, I had to stretch my arms out to my sides to keep from falling over.
When I was certain I wouldn’t fall headfirst onto the blue marble that covered the floor, I noticed the nine stone columns that rested at regular intervals along the perimeter. They didn’t connect to the domed ceiling overhead. Instead, they rose to only half the height of the room and ended in square slabs.
Each member of the Conclave stood at the top of one of the columns and gazed down at me from their perch. Why did I suddenly feel as if I were on trial?
“Is there something wrong?”
“We’re curious,” said one of the white-robed figures in front of me. “How is it possible for a fairy, even a vampyre fae, to be imbued with necromancy?”
They definitely believed I was guilty of something. “How would I know? I’m just as rattled about this as you are.”
“Really?” This time a figure in gray behind me spoke. “Why do we sense you possess more knowledge on this subject than you care to give voice to?”
I did my best not to betray my emotions. If the Conclave believed I was hiding information from them, magical law allowed them to reach into my mind and take it. If I had still been a prince and hadn’t been banished, my father would bring the might of the fae down upon their heads for such a violation.
